Small Plane Flips at Del Norte Airport

From Rio Grande County Sheriff’s office;

On September 25, 2022 at approximately 3:36 p.m. deputies from the Rio Grande Sheriff’s
Office responded to a report of a small airplane that had crashed at the Del Norte Airport.
The occupants of the airplane, a father and adult son from Kersey, Colorado, were treated and released from a local hospital following the incident.

The airplane, a 1993 Thorp single engine, was landing at the airport when a strong wind gust
created unstable landing conditions. The pilot was able to keep the airplane on its wheels as it traveled off the runway. The airplane continued for a significant distance before the landing gear became imbedded in the soft soil, causing the airplane to flip onto its top.

The Del Norte Fire Department and airport management were called to the scene. NTSB was notified and will be following up on the local investigation.
