Mike Hurst, President of Del Norte Bank, gets a gleam in his eye when you ask him about the Del Norte Bank signing up to become a part of “Bank On” a new initiative spearheaded by Phil Weiser, Colorado State Attorney General. “When we heard about it at a bankers conference we attended, it was exactly what we were looking for to further our goal of reaching out to the community” said Hurst.
The program is designed to break down barriers and educate those in the community who either do not use banks or under utilize them for various reasons. Those same people very often fall into the predatory lending traps set by the numerous pay day loan services and pawn shops thus perpetuating a potentially endless cycle of debt. The cynics say Bank On is nothing more than another government vehicle designed to gather and accumulate information on individuals and their spending habits.
